Out of the five senses, most people consider vision their most precious. Yet, we take the health of our eyes for granted, and aside from wearing sunglasses or annual visits to the optometrist ,we do very little to care for them. Damage to the eyes is a cumulative process and can result in conditions like cataracts or even age-related macular degeneration developing later in life. A new concern – increased exposure to high-energy blue light – is raising awareness of the importance of supporting visual health across all age groups (see our blog from June 22nd: A ddressing a Growing Visual Health Concern: High Energy Blue Light). Supporting eye health starts with the right nutrients, specifically the macular carotenoids.
Why Macular Carotenoids Are Important
Of the 600 carotenoids found in nature only three are found in the eye—lutein, RR-zeaxanthin and RS (meso)-zeaxanthin—and are collectively known as the macular carotenoids. As their name suggests they are preferentially deposited in the macula, a region of the eye responsible for highest visual performance. They play critical roles in visual function and protecting the eyes from damaging free radicals generated by sources of energy including ultraviolet and high-energy blue light. Therefore, macular carotenoids play a critical role in safeguarding eye health and visual function.
Since our bodies cannot produce lutein and zeaxanthin required for healthy eyes, obtaining them from the diet is crucial. However, research shows that dietary intake of these important carotenoids is far below beneficial levels and supplementation can ensure optimal intake. And eye health isn’t just a concern for an aging population. Early and consistent intake of lutein, RR-zeaxanthin and RS (meso)-zeaxanthin is important to maintain eye health for a lifetime.
Why Lutemax 2020 Is Unique
Not all eye health supplements are created equal. In fact, very few supplements on the market today contain all three macular carotenoids at adequate levels to support eye health. OmniActive’s Lutemax 2020 is a naturally-derived extract providing lutein, RR-zeaxanthin and RS (meso)-zeaxanthin at the same 5:1 ratio found in nature. The result is a complete macular carotenoid formula that protects eyes from the daily assaults they’re exposed to everyday. Macular carotenoids are the foundation for supporting visual function and Lutemax 2020 is a convenient and complete solution to fill the gaps left in our diet for a lifetime of healthy eyes.

Monday’s Great American Eclipse has magnified the important—and often times overlooked—topic of sunlight exposure on vision health. The cardinal rule for eclipse watching is, of course, do not look directly at the eclipse with naked eyes. The reason for this directive is called solar retinopathy. This is a condition that occurs when the sun’s intense light floods the retina and causes irreparable damage. However, an eclipse is not the only time during which the sun can damage the eye. Although the sun is most commonly associated with UVA and UVB radiation, within the spectrum of visible light emitted from the sun hides harmful high-energy blue light.
