The Growing Concern for High-Energy Blue Light Exposure
With technology consuming our lives—cell phones, computers, televisions, tablets, and more—our eyes are constantly exposed to a type of light called high energy blue light. Not only are we exposed to this type of light when using digital screens, sources such as the sun and efficient indoor lighting (LED and CFL) emit high-energy blue light as well—all sources we’re exposed to on a daily basis and whose popularity continues to substantially increase. Both short-term and long-term exposure can affect our eyes, including eye fatigue, eye strain, and if left unprotected, even vision. More and more people are becoming aware of the dangers of exposure to high-energy blue light.
In a recent poll—as part of OmniActive’s consumer insights program—nearly 2,000 participants between the ages of 18 and 75, indicated a concern for their eyesight. When asked about their top concern for eye health, nearly 60 percent of respondents indicated that their top concern was spending long hours on digital devices like a computer or smartphone.
With a growing concern for the harmful effects of high-energy blue light from prolonged use of digital devices comes the need to support healthy visual function. Science has shown the importance of the macular carotenoids – lutein, RR-zeaxanthin and RS (meso)-zeaxanthin- to protect the eyes. Their role as blue light filters and potent antioxidants to reduce oxidative stress underscore the importance of getting adequate amounts to support visual performance. Lutein and zeaxanthin are not produced by the body but rather found in leafy vegetables and yellow to orange fruits and vegetables and RS-zeaxanthin is found in fish such as trout. Given that we don’t eat enough greens or fish to get the recommended levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, supplementation is a more practical solution. Lutemax 2020 from OmniActive is a natural marigold extract that provides all three macular carotenoids at a specific ratio optimal for eye health. Numerous studies, including the recently published B.L.U.E. study (Blue Light User Exposure) show that supplementing with Lutemax 2020 provides unique benefits for eye health.

Monday’s Great American Eclipse has magnified the important—and often times overlooked—topic of sunlight exposure on vision health. The cardinal rule for eclipse watching is, of course, do not look directly at the eclipse with naked eyes. The reason for this directive is called solar retinopathy. This is a condition that occurs when the sun’s intense light floods the retina and causes irreparable damage. However, an eclipse is not the only time during which the sun can damage the eye. Although the sun is most commonly associated with UVA and UVB radiation, within the spectrum of visible light emitted from the sun hides harmful high-energy blue light.
