Hosted by the American Society of Nutrition (ASN), Nutrition 2020 Live Online is an interactive forum that offers content in the form of lectures, scientific sessions, satellite programs, virtual abstract presentations, virtual exhibits, and more.
The three posters presented at Nutrition 2020 included:
1. “Efficacy of a Novel Integrated Active Herbal Formulation in Experimentally Induced Osteoarthritis Rat Model”
2. “Protective Effect of a Novel Highly Bioavailable Formulation of Curcumin in Experimentally Induced Osteoarthritis Rat Model”
3. “Efficacy of a Novel Integrated Active Herbal Formulation in Experimentally Induced Rat Model for Dry Eye Disease”
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating chronic illness that affects millions of people globally. Current medical treatments appear to be only moderately effective and associated with adverse events. Hence health care professionals are exploring natural alternatives to safely manage the symptoms of OA.
The first poster noted above evaluated a novel OmniActive formulation comprised of plant extracts and validated its efficacy using a well-established animal model for OA. The study showed that this integrated herbal formulation has a strong protective effect against OA via its multi-modal mechanism of action, producing significant reductions in inflammation, oxidative stress and collagen degradation.
The second poster noted above also focused on OA, specifically knee OA, which is a chronic and debilitating disease initiated by physical damage and accumulated oxidative stress, followed by exaggerated inflammation leading to cartilage damage. Curcumin from turmeric root is a well-known anti-inflammatory agent that has been extensively used in traditional medicine, including for management of knee OA. However, a key limitation of using curcumin is its bioavailability. By improving the stability of curcumin under various pH conditions as found in the digestive tract, OmniActive has developed a novel, highly bioavailable curcumin called Advanced UltraSOL™ Curcumin (AUC). This study confirmed the efficacy of this enhanced curcumin formulation on restoring joint architecture, and reducing joint swelling and inflammation using a well-established rat model of knee OA.
The third poster noted above focused on dry eye disease (DED), a highly prevalent condition characterized by inadequate lubrication, which can lead to discomfort, visual disturbance and potential damage to the ocular surface. Artificial tears (lubricant eye drops) represents the most common therapy for DED, but they provide only temporary and incomplete symptomatic relief. In this study, OmniActive researchers evaluated the efficacy of a formulation consisting of several ingredients including the macular carotenoids (lutein and zeaxanthin isomers) on dry eye symptoms in a rat model. The formulation significantly improved tear volume, tear breakup time, and tear film integrity, while also reducing inflammation.
